PROOFREADING RATES

Many proofreaders apply one standard proofreading price per thousand words. However, although the word count can give an idea of overall cost, the fact is that fewer corrections take less time. So an hourly proofreading rate means you always pay a fair price for what your work needs.

I charge £30/hour. This equates to an average proofreading cost per thousand words of £10 – £15.

If you would like a firm quote for proofreading up front, please send me your writing, together with the word count (including tables, captions, headings etc), the type of writing/intended audience, and any deadline you have. You might find the following links useful:

I offer a 10% reduction for proofreading more than 30,000 words (Word documents only).

EDITING RATES

The rate for editing is £30 per hour, as for proofreading (see above).

However, editing takes longer than proofreading. This means the editing cost per 1,000 words could vary from £15 – £30, depending on the level of help required.

Any up-front quote for editing takes into account the number of words that are sent to me, even if your final word count ends up lower.

What’s the difference between proofreading and editing?

Proofreading is (or should be!) the final check for accuracy. It covers spellings, punctuation and grammar. It may also include a check for consistency of spacing, font style, numbering etc.

Proofreading is sometimes called copy-editing, but it does not include the elements of editing shown below.

Editing looks at flow, logic, style and clarity:-

  • Is the writing suitable for your readers?
  • Does it mean what you intended?
  • Does the order make sense?

There are different levels of editing, some more in-depth than others.

(If you ask me to edit your work, I also include a proofreading check as above.)

Please note – I do not offer editing for academic essays, only proofreading.
